Green Finance Education Charter

29 June 2021 @ 8:00 am - 1 July 2021 @ 5:00 pm

Event 1

29th June, 8.30-9.30 am BST

“Transition finance: beyond “financing clean and green”

This special webcast opens a three-part celebration of the first anniversary of the Green Finance Education Charter during London Climate Action Week by posing sobering questions on “transition finance.”

Meeting the world’s climate objectives – notably those of the Paris agreement – is no longer about simply financing the world’s “clean and green” projects, about dividing the world into green and brown.

Professionals need a clear understanding of the mechanics of climate change and global warming, and of setting metrics and performance indicators that align with Paris and the rest. They also need a deep knowledge of sectors and firms to be able to work with management to develop and understand transition plans.

Professional expertise and judgment is key; transition finance will be very hard to reduce to automated credit-scoring, normal investment analysis and the like because of (a) the individual nature of each firm’s transition, and (b) the ethical dimensions involved around alignment and speed of transition. There are also complications in balancing different sustainability factors.  This is a great opportunity for banking and finance professionals to demonstrate their professionalism; this webcast will explore the “transition finance” horizon to assess the professional skills needed today, and tomorrow.

1 July – 9.30-10.30 am

“How can we equip finance professionals to support sustainable growth?”

The market for Green Finance continues to evolve and innovate as the ecosystem matures. The recent Dasgupta review on The Economics of Biodiversity and an increasing focus on Natural Capital all point to the need for the market to develop further as new methodologies and developments are required. To deliver the power and value of private finance, it is critical that finance professionals have the skills and tools to support the changes necessary to support our planet.

In this final session from the Green Finance Education Charter, we will hear from leaders representing actuaries, management accountants and treasurers on the challenges they see and how they are supporting their members to fulfil their potential.

Caroline Stockmann, Chief Executive, Association of Corporate Treasurers

Andrew Harding, Chief Executive, Management Accounting, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants.

Louise Pryor, President-elect, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

Moderator: Carmen Nuzzo, Senior Consultant, Principles for Responsible Investment
